Event Details

The past few years have seen the creation of numerous ‘Java.next’ languages. Among these is Clojure, a dynamic, functional, and concurrency-oriented Lisp for the JVM. This presentation will introduce you to Clojure, starting with the key philosophical principles that drove its development and the resulting practical benefits. Next, you will be introduced to Clojure’s simple syntax, data types, and data structures. This session will next delve into some of the language’s key features in greater detail, in particular:

  • How the read-eval-print loop (REPL) enables dynamic prototyping and programming
  • How macros can eliminate redundant code and create domain-specific languages
  • How the functional programming paradigm can help create programs that are easier to understand and test
  • How Clojure integrates concurrent programming into the language using references and software transactional memory (STM)
  • How Java and Clojure can work with each other seamlessly

We're also have another book swap this meeting. If you have found that you have learned all you can from one or more of your books and they have outlived their usefulness, why not have a little bit of fun and see if someone will trade a book or two with you? Bring as many books as you like and come prepared to have fun!
We'll spend the first 15 minutes of the meeting eating pizza and swapping books.
